An overlay network is a computer network that is built on top of another network. Overlay network decouples network services from the underlying infrastructure by encapsulating one packet inside of another packet. An overlay network is a telecommunications network that is built on top of another network and is supported by its infrastructure. An overlay network decouples network services from the underlying infrastructure by encapsulating one packet inside of another packet. Simply put, an overlay network is a virtual network of nodes and logical links, which are built on top of an existing network. Using overlay networks, multiple layers of network abstraction can be created to run virtualized network layers, which are supported by a physical infrastructure. In overlay network, the nodes are connected using virtual or logical links. These nodes may connect through physical links in the underlying networks. The overlay network in a P2P file sharing system consists of the nodes. These nodes participate in the file sharing system and the logical links exists between them. All nodes in an overlay network are connected with one another by means of logical or virtual links and each of these links correspond to a path in the underlying network.
