Frame Relay is a standardized wide area network technology that specifies the physical and data link layers of digital telecommunications channels using a packet switching methodology.
Whenever an end point needs to send data, it uses a DLCI (or virtual circuit number) to identify the preestablished path (the PVC) through the frame relay network to the correct destination. However, an end point cannot use PVCs dynamically to communicate with other end points on a network.
Frame relay is a packet-switching telecommunication service designed for cost-efficient data transmission for intermittent traffic between local area networks (LANs) and between endpoints in wide area networks (WANs).
Frame Relay eliminates all layer 3processing, in practice, this means that there is no layer 3 information or functions required in order for a packet to traverse a frame relay network. There are only a fewlayer 2 functions used, also known as “core aspects”.
A permanent virtual circuit (PVC) is a software-defined logical connection in a network such as a frame relay network. In frame relay, the end points and a stated bandwidth called a Committed Information Rate (CIR) constitute a PVC, which is defined to the frame relay network devices.
