By contrast, a wide area network not only covers a larger geographic distance, but also generally involves leased telecommunication circuits.

local area network may serve as few as two or three users (for example, in a small-office network) or several hundred users in a larger office. LAN networkingcomprises cables, switches, routers and other components that let users connect to internal servers, websites and other LANs via wide area networks.

Local area networks (LANs) are computer networks ranging in size from a few computers in a single office to hundreds or even thousands of devices spread across several buildings. They function to link computers together and provide shared access to printers, file servers, and other services.
