The network layer is the third level of the Open Systems Interconnection Model (OSI Model) and the layer that provides data routing paths for network communication. Data is transferred in the form of packets via logical network paths in an ordered format controlled by the network layer.

In the seven-layer OSI model of computer networking, the network layer is layer 3. The network layer is responsible for packet forwarding including routing through intermediate routers.

Layer 3, the network layer, is most commonly known as the layer where routing takes place. A router’s main job is to get packets from one network to another. A Layer 3 switch is a high-performance device for network routing. A router works with IP addresses at layer 3 of the model. Layer 3 networks are built to run on on layer 2 networks. In an IP layer 3 network, the IP portion of the datagram has to be read.

Layer 1 Bits are transferred over a variety of medium, cables, ports etc. Frames are used to define the data between two nodes on a data link, and when there’s more than two nodes, the network helps address route and control traffic.
