In this article we will discuss What is A Router is a Computer, will make brief discussion on Router. In last article we discuss about What is Next-Hop Address.
A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. There are many types of infrastructure routers available. Routers perform the traffic directing functions on the Internet. Data sent through the internet, such as a web page or email, is in the form of data packets.
Branch – Teleworkers, small businesses, and medium-size branch sites. Includes Cisco Integrated Services Routers (ISR) G2 (2nd generation).
WAN – Large businesses, organizations, and enterprises. Includes the Cisco Catalyst Series Switches and the Cisco Aggregation Services Routers (ASR).
Service Provider – Large service providers. Includes Cisco ASR, Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System, and 7600 Series routers.
A router will have at least two network cards (NICs), one physically connected to one network and the other physically connected to another network. packet is typically forwarded from one router to another router through the networks that constitute an internetwork until it reaches its destination node.
An example of a router is computer hardware that transfers Internet messages to a laptop in another room; a wireless router. Regardless of their function, size or complexity, all router models are essentially computers. Just like computers, tablets, and smart devices, routers also require:
Central processing units (CPU).
Operating systems (OS).
Memory consisting of random-access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM), and flash.
